'Trasformazione' ('Transformation'), by Lucia Fanelli, is the painting that won the art competition 'Vini in cerca d'autore' ('Wines in Search of An Author'), launched by Cantine Soloperto

The painting, an oil on canvas by artist Lucia Fanelli from Manduria, will be reproduced as label for for one of the Soloperto excellent wines bottled for the foreign markets.

The Primitivo grape, though it grows exclusively in a limited Italian area within the Apulia region, is found also in Croatia, from where it probably originated and where it is called Crljenak Kastelanski. In addition, testing done in 1990 by Professor Carole Meredith at UC Davis showed that it has the same DNA as all Californian Zinfandels, which are probably just the most recent clones of the ancient Mediterranean vine.

The work represents a bunch of brightly colored ripe grapes hanging from the vine. 'Transformation' refers to what happens to the grapes once the bunch is harvested and, after being crushed, undergoes a series of changes to finally become 'Primitivo' wine, the precious nectar typical of the Apulia region. To be precise, it will be the Primitivo di Manduria DOC by Cantine Soloperto that will wear the new label reproducing the winning painting made by the young local artist.

Two previous winning works of the contest 'Vini in cerca d'autore' have already been reproduced as labels by the Cantine Soloperto. The first was the 2003 winner, which became the label for the Primitivo del Salento IGT, then, in 2004, the painting entitled 'Il volo della farfalla' ('The Flight of the Butterfly'), by Federica Stranieri, another artist from Manduria, became the label for the latest Soloperto wine creation, the Novello Primitivo del Salento IGT.

"We are truly satisfied by the results of the event," said Sabrina Soloperto, owner of the well known winery. "This year the participation by artists was higher than expected."

In fact, as many as 63 artists from all over Italy participated in the competition. Each participant presented three works of art, of which only one was competing for the prize.

"This year as well, the professionalism of the artists and the quality of the artwork was exceptional," continues the entrepreneur. "The works of art, realized using a variety of techniques, challenged the jury making it difficult for them to choose a winner. All entries were truly interesting. At the end, the jury chose the artwork that they felt best described visually the Primitivo wine," reitereted Sabrina Soloperto.

The second place went to Patrizia Iannone from Rome, with a piece entitled 'Putto di Bacco', ('Bacchus' Cherub') the third place was awarded to Gaetano Rizzelli, from Trepuzzi in the province of Lecce, with 'Passaggio a Est' ('East Passage').

During the event promoted by Cantine Soloperto a separate art competition took place. The winner was Giovanni Stanca from Soleto, in the province of Lecce, with a wood sculpture entitled 'Tartaruga su bottiglie' ('Turtle On Bottles'); the second place went to painter Enza Schiavoni from Villa Castelli, in the province of Brindisi, with an untitled painting.

The critics' prize was awarded to Emilia Stefanìa from Ischitella, in the province of Foggia, instead, the first place according to the public that was invited to vote, went to Mirella Bitetti from Ginosa, in the province of Taranto. A special mention was extended to artists Antonio Ambrosone from Bellizzi Irpino, Fiorella Femia from Monteforte Irpino, and Pia Fuccillo from Mercogliano, all in the province of Avellino.
