Azienda Ciavolich Launches a Braille Wine Label
Staff Writer – May 8, 2005

Braille labelsActing on a suggestion by architect Cristiano Di Sabatino, who worked at a botanical garden for visually impaired people, the Azienda Ciavolich from Miglianico, in the province of Chieti, started a courageous and valuable project.

The creation of wine labels that include wine name and description in Braille characters, so that visually impaired people are able to identify and choose their favorite wine, is definitely noteworthy and points to a socially conscious mindset. The labels are produced with the collaboration and assistance of the Pescara chapter of the Unione Italiana Ciechi (Italian Association of Blind People).

The initiative is but a drop in a sea of lack of interest and attention toward visually impaired people. In fact, neither the Italian national paper dedicated to blind and visually impaired people, nor the expiration date on prescription drugs, to name just two examples, are available in Braille.

It hasn't been easy, either, to find a printer that could do the job. After a lengthy search in the field, the Azienda Ciavolich hired the Tipolitografia FG from Savignano sul Panaro, in the province of Modena, which has the technical know-how, having done work in collaboration with the Modena University related to another Braille project dedicated to visually impaired people.

Prizing the initiative of the Azienda Ciavolich, we hope that this will be an example followed by other companies in various production and information fields. In the meanwhile, we invite our readers to actively reward the Abruzzo winery by requesting, ordering and drinking their wines.
