"Promote transparency in wine labeling, including producer's name, nutrition factors, and clear indication of territorial origins".
This is one of the goals included in the agreement of intent signed by Paolo Bedoni, President of Coldiretti, the Italian agricultural grower association. and the President of Città del Vino, or "Wine Cities", Floriano Zambon. The two organizations represent 530 groups that either produce DOC wines in their areas or are linked to wine production because of their history, tradition and/or culture.
Thus, the largest European agricultural organization and the Italian wine capitals are undertaking the development and promotion of local quality wines, which must be protected from contamination by genetically engineered seeds and crops.
Their mission is avoid the spreading of genetically engineered biopharms in the Italian fields, wineries and tables, favoring the production of healthy, genuine and quality wines, made with total respect for the environment. At the same time, they seek to realize initiatives to inform and educate consumers. These are the qualifying elements of the agreement between Coldiretti and Città del Vino.
The main goal is to protect the Italian enogastronomy, save the historic landscapes, favor local development and, at the same time, create conditions that keep peasants in the countryside.
"In addition", concludes Coldiretti "we aim to promote wine tourism that, according to CENSIS (Centro Studi Investimenti Sociali, or Center for the Study of Social Investments) involves over six million people per year, including numerous foreigners. These data are confirmed by the research made by the Istituto Leonardo-ICE (Leonardo [Da Vinci] Institute and Institute for Foreign Commerce), according to which, 45% of foreign visitors name wine and food as first things that come to mind when mentioning Italy".
